For my use case, I need to invoice customers on a monthly bases with a recurring invoice.
To make it clear what they are paying for exactly, I need to include the (name of) the current or next month. In other accounting systems there is the concept of having variables in the text of the invoice, that gets replaced dynamically.
For example: "Subscription services for {{CURRENT_MONTH + 1}} {{CURRENT_YEAR}}" would result in the invoice rendering "Subscription services for July 2026", if sent in June 2026.
I could not find a similar feature in Akaunting, even after searching for a while. I'm wondering if this (or another method that would accomplish the same thing) is available.
Hi Erik,
You're right — Akaunting doesn't support dynamic variables inside invoice
item names, descriptions or notes. Placeholder tags only exist for e-mail
templates (Settings > Email Templates), where you can use tags like
{invoice_number}, {invoice_total} and {invoice_due_date} — but they are not
parsed on the invoice document itself.
Two things you can do today:
1. The generated invoice carries the issue date of the period it was created
for, so the billing period is visible even without a variable in the text.
2. On self-hosted, you can add it yourself with a small app/module: recurring
documents fire the DocumentRecurring event (see RecurringCheck command)
when a new invoice is generated. A listener on that event can replace your
own placeholders in the item name / notes before the invoice is saved:
str_replace('{next_month}', now()->addMonth()->translatedFormat('F Y'), ...)
That gives exactly the "Subscription services for July 2026" result you
described.
I'll pass the request on as a feature suggestion — placeholder tags for
recurring documents is a reasonable addition.
